RISK ASSESSMENTS LOs: KNOW what a risk assessment is UNDERSTAND risk assessment processes in HSC (P3) BE ABLE TO carry out a risk assessment (M1)
KEY TERMS • Hazard • An object or situation that could harm someone • Risk • The harm a hazard can do; the chance of suffering harm, loss, injury…. • Risk assessment • This is a process where an employer considers the possible hazards in their place of work and then determines what precautions need to be put in place to prevent people from being harmed.
Categories of risk: • Generally risks are categorised as LOW, MEDIUM or HIGH level.
Employers MUST • Carry out a risk assessment in the workplace. It’s a legal requirement. • These need to be reviewed at regular intervals.
The employer needs to consider: • What are the hazards? Identify risks • How likely is this to happen? Estimating risks – usually done using a scale eg. 1 – 5, traffic lights system • Who might be harmed and how? • How can you reduce/eliminate risk? Control the risk • Record your findings • Who should take action? • How can you be sure that the hazard will not return? What further action is necessary? Monitoring effectiveness of controls. Who is responsible? • Have all necessary records been kept? ? Record keeping

Now, complete task (P3) • Write a report which explains risk assessment processes in the context of everyday activities in health and social care. Your report should include processes for identifying potential hazards and estimating the associated risks as well as developing appropriate controls for each risk. • TIP: Remember to use examples and give your opinion (always support your thoughts with evidence) rather than just describe.
