Lewis Personality [Hesitant] [Uncomfortable] [Uncertain] [Nervously] Intelligent – University Graduate Financially motivated “I need the money” p.1– the only motive/reason for doing the play Shy Ignorant – demonstrates prevailing social attitude towards mental patients “What is somebody forgets to take their medicine” p.5 Limited confidence – finds it hard to control the group of patients. Uncomfortable by their disease? Lacks self esteem. Questions everything. [Not knowing what to say], “You said you were going to help me” p.1, [Lewis feels betrayed]

  4. Lewis Values/Beliefs Loyalty – Brecht play “A man sacrificing himself for the good of his mates” War mentality “Love is not so important nowadays” p.10 Influenced by Free Love Movement. Ironic statement considering he is in a relationship with Lucy. Perhaps it suggests that their relationship is weak, superficial. Perhaps it suggests that Lewis is merely a follower at this stage of the play. A Conformist who simply says and acts as he is expected to by his two friends, Nick and Lucy
