  1. HOW TO BE A BETTER TEACHER BY FUTURE TEACHERS CLUB DELANO CHAPTER

  2. Help Students Get Involved • Group work • Groups competing against each other to solve problems or writing problems up on the board • Collaboration • Allow students to share strategies to solve problems • Make the environment of the classroom comfortable and enjoyable for the students • Make games

  3. Help Students with English as a Second Language • Explain vocabulary • (teachers should explain words that are hard in the textbook) • Teachers should try to use simple words. • Sometimes accents prevent students form understanding the language. For example, the teachers could write the words on the board to help them.

  4. Continued… • If a teacher doesn’t speak Spanish or the language that the students speak, ask other students who does to help them.

  5. TeachersNeedto bePrepared • Make the students realize that you know what you are talking about • Be prepare to answer questions • Students expect teachers to teach them and help them • Example of what the teacher should not do: • Teacher starts to do a problem, cannot finish it, just stops doing it and goes to the other problem

  6. TeachersShould bePatient • Be able to say things in a different way • Do the problems step-by-step without skipping steps because most of the books miss steps. These may be the important steps to understand the problem • Do not show your frustration to the students.

  7. MakeStudentsFeelSecureandConfidentin theClass(all settings) • Don’t embarrass a student in front of the class (Never announce personal scores.) • Don’t say “You should already know this” when students ask a question. • Create an environment where students don’t feel intimidated. • Be available to students If teachers help students feel confident and secure, students are more likely to approach them.

  8. What Should Teachers Do About Disruptive Students? • Attempt to motivate students to become involved in the class • Chit-Chat amongst students; ask them if they have a question. If this don’t work, then try to do the extreme (ask those kind of students to leave)
