Nancy Ward • Known as the Beloved Woman of Tennessee • Cherokee woman who wanted peace • Married Kingfisher Nanyehi • Took up his fighting when he was shot in a battle with the Creek • Cherokees won the battle • Married Bryant Ward, an Irish trader • Informed John Sevier that Cherokees were planning to destroy white settlements.

  3. John Sevier • Leader of the Over the Mountain Men (a militia in the Revolutionary War) • Fought the British in battle & won • The only governor for the state of Franklin • He was the 1st governor of Tennessee • Concerned about Native American Issues.

  4. Sequoyah • Cherokee • Made the Cherokee alphabet – it took 12 years & had 85 symbols • Allowed Cherokees to create a newspaper • Wrote their own constitution

  5. Andrew Jackson • Too young to fight in the Revolutionary War • Fought in the war of 1812 & earned the nickname Old Hickory for being tough • Elected 7th president in 1828 • Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act (1838 -Trail of Tears)

  6. Sam Houston • Lived with Cherokee for most of his childhood • Was a great soldier in the War of 1812 • Became Governor of Tennessee in 1827 • Moved to Texas to fight in the War with Mexico • Led a battle at the Alamo to give Texas its independence from Mexico • Senator & Governor of Texas

David Crockett • A great story teller • Was a soldier under Andrew Jackson (against the Creeks) • Settlers in TN “frontier” set up a government, he was the judge • Elected to House of Representatives • Wore leather clothes in Washington D.C. • Opposed Jackson’s Indian Removal Act • Left politics and went to Texas to fight in the War with Mexico • Died at the Alamo • Known as “Davy” & “King of the Wild Frontier”

  8. Daniel Boone • Made the first white settlement in Kentucky • Created the Wilderness Trail • Allowed settlers to come to the frontier of TN because of his creation of the Wilderness Trail

  9. James K. Polk • Became president in 1845 • Andrew Jackson thought he would be a good president • Acquired the rest of the 48 states • Bought western land for 15 million from Mexico • Acquired CA, TX, UT, NM, AZ, WY, & CO
