Advantages Disadvantages “Home Turf advantage” SOME Indian allies Britain is distracted by war with FRANCE, too (a two-front war). Congress offered soldiers big pay and sometimes land! Jefferson cut military spending Only 16 ships in our navy Army was small and ill-equipped Officers knew little about warfare Poorly trained troops
June 1812, President Madison Asks Congress for a Declaration of War
Unprepared for War • TJ cut back on defense spending • US Navy only had 16 ships • US Army was small, ill equipped and officers were not very knowledgeable • Soldiers were poorly trained and lacked experience.
Battle of Lake Erie • 1813 • Captain Oliver Perry (had no fleet…designed and built his own ships) • American victory • “We have met the enemy and they are ours.”
We’re in Trouble • In 1814 France lost to Britain and now all of the attention turns to US • British ships sail into Chesapeake Harbor, defeated US at Bladensburg, Maryland…
We’re in BIG Trouble • The British marched on to Washington, DC • The British set fire to the “White House”
…our flag was still there. • Fort McHenry was the key to defending Baltimore. US troops held the fort. • Francis Scott Key penned “The Star Spangled Banner” poem at the morning victory.
Andrew Jackson - Our Hero • Defeated natives at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. • Took Pensacola, Florida • Dug trenches to better defend New Orleans
British attacked New Orleans on Jan. 8, 1815…two weeks after the war ended…US wins!
“Mr. Madison’s War” is Over • Delegates from New England met at the HARTFORD CONVENTION and threatened to leave the Union. • Peace treaty was signed in Ghent, Belgium on December 24, 1814.
The Treaty of Ghent “Nothing was adjusted, nothing was settled.” -John Quincy Adams

EMBARGO Supplies of important imports were cut off. $80 Million drop in exports Docks in south = piled high with cotton/tobacco New England felt the economic hit worst of all Nonintercourse Act Neutral James Madison
900,000 white settlers moved in! Settlers farmed and hunted animals that were native food source Settlers ignored treaties that promised Indians rights Violence increased as Brits sold guns to Natives. Muskets (guns) Cloth Cooking pots Whiskey
A league – alliance Indian Territory Save Indian culture; unify against white settlers William Henry Harrison 1811 – WHH marched 1,000 soldiers to “Prophetstown” on Tippecanoe Creek Prophet (Tecumseh’s brother) led a surprise attack against WHH = HUGE losses on BOTH sides. Whites won, Prophetstown destroyed…resistance continues. More impressment, more stealing ships, giving guns to Natives
“Devotion to one’s Country ” – National PRIDE “We need to go to war against England now! We could win Florida and Canada AND finally put the Brits in their place” Henry Clay or John C. Calhoun TJ reduced spending on defense. Navy only had 16 ships. Army small; low supplies; poorly trained; no experience Lake Erie He made and designed his own ships; he triumphed even though his ship was damaged.
Andrew Jackson France Chesapeake Washington DC Fort McHenry Francis Scott Key Andrew Jackson 2,000 to about 7 !!!!
It happened TWO weeks AFTER the war was over! Mr. Madison’s War Hartford Convention (New England merchants were hurt most by the war) Treaty of Ghent John Quincy Adams No one? Nothing? “Nothing adjusted, nothing settled” Return to pre-war conditions. It did NOT get a promise of England to stop seizing US ships or impressing sailors
