Day III History as Fun
Introduction • Have you ever tasted a recipe from the middle ages, well try this Summer Fruit, Honey, and Hazelnut Crumble the recipe can be found at • http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~mjw/recipes/ethnic/historical/med-anglosaxon-coll.html#8
Making authentic food from Historical periods is just one way of making History “fun”, and memorable. There are plenty of “fun” activates that can be used to augment the normal classroom routine.
Entry Task • Please write in your learning journal about: • When was the last time you had fun in class? Write about a memorable classroom experience that you had when you were a student.
Lesson • There are many fun activities that can be used to help student connect to material in which they may not have much interest. • How often do we get caught up in just trying to teach material and forget that having fun from time to time creates interest and goodwill in students.
What fun activities are there? • Mock trials are a great way to teach students to see bias. To look at all the facts and see multiple points of view. The are good way to demonstrate how the law shapes History in way that is very engaging. Use your computers to go to the webpage http://www.classbrain.com/artteensm/publish/article_17.shtml
Field Trips • Field Trips are a powerful tool to teach History. Physically seeing places of Historical significance can really make History come alive. Use your computers to look at these websites to get some ideas on how to plan a historical field trip. • http://www.rnib.org.uk/xpedio/groups/public/documents/PublicWebsite/public_ccftrips.hcsp • http://www.washingtonhistory.org/Education/fieldtrips.aspx
Play some Games • There are computer and board games that a can teach a lot to students about History and it fun at the same time. Take a look at this page for some ideas. • http://www.boardgamecentral.com/games/historical.html
Food • Food was already mentioned in the beginning of the lesson, but it can be a great way to get students to understand how people lived in the past, that they were in fact real people just like us. Here are a couple of sites to look at but there are many more out there. http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~mjw/recipes/ethnic/historical/ http://www.lkwdpl.org/lhs/historicrecipes/
Discussion • Talk about how having fun can win student over to be interested in History. Also discuss when it is appropriate to use these fun activities and when it may be a distraction.
Assignment • Create a plan for at least two fun activities and how you can make them educationally useful. • Be sure to include what your learning objective is and how your fun activity gets students to reach that objective.
