A Lion’s Life Cycle Lions are born blind. Lion cubs learn to hunt food when they are one year old. As male lions mature, they kill the older males and take control of the pride until they are killed.
Inherited Traits Like all cats, lions do not chew their food. They swallow it in chunks. When they eat, they use only one side of their mouth at a time. The tongue is covered with rough spines that help the lion scrape meat of bones.
The Lion’s Habitat The lion’s habitat has very few trees and tall grass. There are lots of zebras, cheetahs, antelopes, and giraffes.
The Lion’s Habitat The weather is very sunny and dry. They usually live in savannas. The gray area shows that lion live in the southern and eastern parts of Africa.
Adaptations In order to survive, lions adapted manes to protect them from predators. They also have retractable claws to move across the savanna. Lions and lioness need dry grass to hide in so they can camouflage. Also, a lioness need other lionesses to hunt a prey.
Causing Problems Lions can cause problems by attacking humans and livestock. They also kill endangered species.
Interesting Facts Lions can see in dim moonlight. They have the loudest roar among all wild cats.
More Interesting Facts Lioness do most of the hunting for the pride. During the character development for the movie “The Lion King”, they had a real lion brought in to observe its behavior.
Questions I have How many types of lions are there? Will lions become extinct? Can a wild lion become domesticated?
