What Caused the Rebellion? • Hope in slaves gaining freedom in Florida • Spain issued proclamation about giving freedom and land to slaves who reached Florida (issued agents to get word around) • Malaria epidemic weakened power of slaveholders • On Sunday so planters would attend mass and be unarmed
What Happened in the Rebellion? • Sunday, September 9th, 1739 • Jemmy= leader • Gathered 20 enslaved Africans near Stono River • Marched South, gathering total of 80 slaves • Burned 7 plantations and killed 20-25 whites along the way
Turning the Tide • South Carlina’s Governor William Bull encounters group on horseback and leaves to warn other slaveholders • Militia numbering 20-100 caught up with group of 80 slaves • In confrontation, 20 whites and 44 slaves killed • Rest of slaves sold off to markeks in West Indies • Colonists mounted severed heads of rebels on stakes along major roadways to serve as warning for other slaves
Why is this Terrorism? • Slavery- violent, uses fear • Rebellion was a reaction to slavery which is terrorism • Whites put slaves heads on the road to intimidate other slaves
