  3. Robert Gourlay • Scottish Canadian • Went around to farmers to ask how things were • He found people weren’t happy • Sent this list of grievances to the government • Was arrested and deported for his trouble

  4. Think • How do you think the average settler/farmer would react to what happened to Gourlay?

  5. William Lyon Mackenzie • Bought a newspaper to criticize the government • The family compact (rich people) smashed his office • Made him more determined • Became leader of the reform movement

  6. Fight, Fight, Fight! • Mackenzie led the rebels to violence in December of 1837 • Most of his men were volunteers who had never fought before • They did bring a few guns…and some farming tools • First and only major battle was in a suburb of Toronto called York • Battle of Montgomery’s Tavern

  7. Run Away! • Mackenzie's “soldiers” were not disciplined • Many ran away at the first sight of gunfire and death • Mackenzie disguised himself as a women and fled to the USA • Continued to support the rebellion, but it was a lost cause

Aftermath • Read “Lord Durham’s Report”, page 43-44 and “Union and Beyond”, page 44-45 • In full sentences answer the following: • Why was Lord Durham sent to Upper Canada? • How did he treat former rebels? • How did those loyal to Britain in the rebellion react to his behaviour? • What recommendations did he make? • Did everyone support those recommendations?
