3. Pastoral letters • They were written to shepherds or pastors of Christian communities • They deal with church life and theology (i.e. pastoral theology)

4. Who were Timothy and Titus?

6. Timothy • One of Paul’s closest companions. According to Acts 16, 1-3 Timothy, who was born of mixed Jewish and pagan parentage, had at sometime become a Christian and began to follow Paul after meeting him at Lystra (modern day Turkey). • Timothy served as Paul’s representative on missions to Thessalonica, Corinth and probably also Philippi. He was in close contact with Paul during the latter’s imprisonment at Ephesus and was also with him at Corinth when Romans was written. • He is listed as the co-author of 4 of Paul’s genuine letters – 2 Cor, Phil, 1 Thess, Phlm.

7. Titus • Titus, a Gentile convert, came with Paul to the Jerusalem conference and later accompanied Paul on a delicate mission to Corinth to patch up relations between Paul and that community. • Later Titus then served there as Paul’s delegate for the gathering of the Jerusalem collection.

9. Who wrote them? • Not Paul • A secretary or disciple • Not forgeries! • Timothy?

Authorship • Quite similar to one another in vocabulary, grammatical usage and style they diverge sharply in all these respects from the clearly genuine letters of Paul • In pastorals – piety, good conscience, epiphany • Paul – cross, freedom, covenant • Paul likes passionate and explosive style, throwing in thoughts and unfinished sentences, whereas Pastorals formal and subdued. • He gives long term rules to colleagues he will see again shortly.

11. Authorship • Less value because not written by Paul? • No! Still part of the Canon • Many writings in New Testament not by Paul but still valuable • “Claimed authorship of a famous person was not uncommon in the ancient world. 14. 1 TIMOTHY Ch. 1 • Instruct against false teachings(1 Tim 1:3-11) The teachers of the Law who are concerned only myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the plan of God that is to be received by faith. The aim of this instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. Some people have deviated from these and turned to meaningless talk.

Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses...O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. (1 Tim 6:11-12.20)
