“After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together.
Simon Peter said to them, ‘I am going fishing.’ They said to him, ‘We are going with you also.’ They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.” John 21:1-3 NKJV
Juan 21:1-3
Before this incident of Jesus’ 3rd Appearance to His disciples, John 21:1 says, “After these things – meaning many things happened before Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples.”
After Gethsemane, where Jesus was betrayed by Judas and the Roman soldiers took Him; • After the scourging, the sufferings of Jesus as He walked the path of Via Dolorosa up to the Cross; • After Peter denied His Master three times Luke 22:60-61;
Perhaps Peter needed special encouragement after his denial – he may have felt completely worthless and discouraged.
1. Peter saw how Judas, his co-disciple betrayed the Master. 2. He saw how the other disciples flee when Jesus was being scourged – He was discouraged, frustrated and totally drained that he even denied his Lord.
A) In fact, he was fishing when he first met Jesus and was called to be a disciple. So when he decided to go fishing again, he may have been making a conscious decision to get away from everything and everybody, and go back to where he had first met the Lord.
B) That was a good move! Why? Because when you get discouraged (pinanghihinaan ka), confused (nalilito ka), or stressed-out (pagod na pagod ka na) you will either:
Go back to the ONE who saves, keeps and satisfies or • You’ll return to whatever was going on in your life before you met Him.
C) God says in Revelation 2:2-5 (TLB): “I have watched your hard work…you have patiently suffered…without quitting. Yet there is one thing wrong; you don’t love me as at first! Think about…your first love…and turn back to me.”
1. When your love for God grows cold, its time to hang out your “Gone Fishing” sign – (isabit mo ang karatula mong “Gone Fishing”) and get back to where you first met Jesus. It’s time to seek Him again, like you did before you had heard so much and seen so much; before life has worn you down.
2. “But I’m busy doing the work of the Lord” you say, that’s the easiest place in the world to crash and burn.
Oswald Chambers said, “Beware of anything that competes with your loyalty to Jesus Christ.” • The greatest competition of devotion to Jesus is service for Him. • Is it time for you to “Go Fishing”?
Hindi natin tinatalikuran ang ating commitment pero kapag drain ka na, stressed out ka na, it’s time na isabit mo “I’ve gone fishing don’t disturbed – I’ll have a re-encounter again with my Lord.”
