Mini-history • P.L. 94-142 Education for All Handicapped Children Act- 1975- federal funding to states that gave SWD “free and appropriate education” in “least restrictive environment”- use if IEP • 1997 IDEA- reauthorization- few adverse consequences for noncompliance • NCLB- 2002- AYP • 2004- IDEA reauthorized again
What is the difference between IDEA and NCLB? • NCLB- group based • IDEA- individual based • What are 504 plans: • Communicable diseases • Chronic health problems • Attention difficulties
Accommodations • What are they? • The adaptations provided for students with disabilities during instruction and assessment so that those students will have a fair opportunity to succeed and can be measured accurately
Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSO) Manual • Presentation accommodations- access in different modes • Response accommodation- some type of assistive device or organizer • Setting accommodations- change the location • Timing and scheduling accommodations- increase amount of time or the way the time is organized
