  1. Hudson Valley Hikers The more ATTRACTIVE your post, the better you and HVH look … … the more DETAILED your post, the less personal liability you’ll bear. EVENT POSTS – Tips and Tricks …

  2. Event Graphic … Element of a Quality Post Inviting to attendees Use a “Series” approach I can create these for you.

  3. Name, “Cell:”, email (@ or {{AT}} Contact info, hike stats … DIFFICULTY: Only four elements … DIFFICULTY: (1) Mileage, (2) Climb (provide options if possible). DIFFICULTY: (3) Unusual trail conditions, and (4) Technical. DIFFICULTY: Is NOT a rating! HIKE TIMES: Time and Rate

  4. “Recommendations” not “Requirements” Gear, clothing recommendations … Especially important for winter, long hikes, technical events Remind people to bring lights and extra batteries Links to snow information: lwf.ncdc.noaa.gov/snow-and-ice/recent.php

  5. “RANGE” APPROACH … with peaks, trailheads, blaze color, HP / bushwhack routes, title / legend. Maps … Trail Junctions”: “Outs” and “Assembly Points” … add these in your event description. Map Caption: Tell users to take a map! Describe car spot, hike start location … add these in your event description. LINKS: Map thumbnail, Google directions link (add drive time?) Link to purchase map. I CAN PROVIDE RANGE MAPS FOR YOU.

  6. Photo Caption: Bold italic. Photos … Export to 469 pixels … or cut and paste (Meetup will automatically create the image). I CAN MAKE THESE FOR YOU TOO! I maintain an enormous library of hike photos.

  7. Date / Time Stamped Event description, reminders, event policies Update Section … Pet Policy(I’m biased here, of course) … If you tell people they can’t bring their best friends … SAY WHY … BE SPECIFIC … Organizers don’t have the legal authority to ban pets. Include special regulations (e.g. Eastern High Peaks leash requirement, muzzle requirement in the Lower Hudson Valley, requirement to carry proof of rabies vaccination)

  8. Links … and HTML Create them HERE: Adjust HTML HERE: EXAMPLE: Open links in a separate tab …

  9. EXAMPLE: Cut and paste in Notepad … Links … and HTML (cont.) … search for the links (e.g., “a href”) ... … paste in the target attribute ( target="_blank")

  14. “Have you provided your first and last name, cell phone number and email address to your organizer for event-day communications?” My questions… “Do you have any medical issues you need to anticipate and / or feel you should communicate to your organizer?” “Have you posted a CLEAR photo of your FACE as part of your membership profile? We'd want to recognize you right away at the trailhead!” “Do you know where the trailhead / car spot locations are?”

  15. The quality of your events reflects your knowledge and leadership abilities … your attention to detail … your concern for your teammates … The Bottom Line … IT JUST MAKES GOOD SENSE: The more information you provide, the less personal liability you inherit as an event organizer. HVH: We’re all in this together!
