Aquatic Life • The Hudson boasts 210 species of fish. • Henry Hudson’s first mate Robert Juet wrote in his journal that “the river was full of fish.” • Adriaen van derDonck also sited whales near Troy in 1647. • Since salt water reaches as far as Poughkeepsie, the Hudson boasts both marine and fresh water species. • Important species include sturgeon, shad, and striped bass. Whaling also has a history here.

  3. “Atlantic Beef” • Sturgeons are the Hudson River’s largest fish. • There species goes back 200 million years. • They can reach 800 pounds and 14 feet. • This species was once so common in the 19th century that is was called “Albany Beef” • Scientific name Acipenseroxyrinchusoxyrinchus

  4. Whaling • In the 1780s whalers from Nantucket moved to Hudson to establish a port. • They were avoiding conflict with the British Navy over tariffs on whale oil. • Products from whales included oil and blubber (for lamps), and baleen (for umbrellas and fishing rods)
