PRESENTING YOURSELF Your 15 Minutes of Fame!
Whether you present your research within your department, at Student Research Day, or at a professional conference, remember that you will be representing the UNM/SOM. • First Impressions DO count! • This is YOUR 15 minutes of fame! • The following information also applies to practice sessions.
Fear of Public Speaking • Consider an introductory speech class, acting class, Toastmasters. • Practice in front of your peers and/or family and friends. • All of the above will take you out of yourself, help you open up and learn to project. • You can be proud of your accomplishments.
Body Language • Crossed Arms – creates a barrier between you and your audience • Stand Up! You want people to be able to see and hear you. • Rocking on heels w/hands in pockets • Can mean “I’m shy” but this is too casual • Speak Up!
Plan and Prepare Your Presentation • Preferably NOT the night before! • “Stuff takes time!” • Make a plan, then build in a buffer. • It’s not too early to begin working on your presentation.
Attending a Conference • Take care of the “unknowns” as much as possible. • Murphy’s Law: “If anything can go wrong, it will.” • Dealing up front with what can happen will help you relax. • Find the room (this also applies to practice sessions.) • Check out the room to get familiar with venue.
Don’t Be Late! • What can being late and frazzled convey toyour audience? • “This wasn’t important to me.” • “I’m VERY important and this gets me attention.” • You will have to pull yourself together and regroup if you begin your presentation this way. • Early morning presentation? Chance you might oversleep? • Place a wake-up call w/hotel. • Have someone call you. • If your hotel is not near the conference center: • Find out shuttle schedule and where it picks up. • How long does it take to get there?
During Your Presentation • Address your audience rather than your slides. • Laser pointer – practice beforehand • Losing your train of thought • Try not to panic! • Take a deep breath. • Take a moment to glance at your slides or notes. • All of the above resets you and gives your audience a chance to digest what you’ve said.
What to Wear • Gentlemen • Wear a suit?? You can, but don’t have to. • For Carmel, plain-colored (or pin-striped), long-sleeved shirt w/tie and dress slacks. Sport coat is optional. • Student Research Day is more casual – Dockers and light colored shirt is fine, tie if you wish. • Madras and plaid are too casual.
Ladies! • No low cut tops or short skirts! • You may have to bend down, reachup, or set up your presentation fromthe floor. • All: • Keep it sensible and simple, and something you can move around in. • Be remembered for what you said not for what you wore. • Questions??
