  2. This year’s intake • 430-450 new first year undergraduates • Majority in college- Bowland Main, ASH House, Bowland annexe, Bowland Hall & Slaidburn House • Small number off campus (30-40): host families, in town or commuting from home • 33 advisors

  3. Bowland College • First college in Lancaster University • Founded in 1964 • Motto Bowland 'Til I Die • Fought hard to stay on the main campus

Getting to know your advisees • Meet your Advisor: Initial freshers’ week meeting with your group- Thursday 4th October - 4pm • Individual meeting for advice if an advisee comes to you with problems/the advisee’s department may forward you a copy of a warning letter e.g. missed seminars & lectures; non-submittal of coursework, personal problems. • Meal with advisees: opportunity to take your group out for a meal & meet them informally. The college pays £8 per head for advisees and yourself (IMPORTANT- please see Pat regarding how to claim etc before taking the group out) • Facebook/Twitter for your group?

Your role as advisor • Provide reassuringly presence while first years settle in and develop independence • Provide first port of call/arbiter • Reinforce message of balanced college life and getting down to study once Freshers’ Week is over • Offer initial help with personal /financial/ study issues but • Refer students to Pat/Bob, Student Based Services or other support as needed or if you need to discuss an issue

Working with advisees • LUSI – Lancaster Uni Student Information: student contact details, courses selected, progress, attendance; if no access ask Pat or Bob • Some students (e.g. young males) can be tricky to engage • Limits of advisor role- don’t feel responsible if student won’t engage- refer to Pat & Bob • Meeting groups – corridor kitchen • Meeting individuals in neutral place- e.g. coffee bar, Bowland Bar, college offices

A few common problems • Wrong course- only 2/3 week window to change course i.e. by end of week 3 • Confidence in settling in socially +/or academically • Culture shock • Freshers continually socialising/partying throughout the term Not putting in sufficient study hours only putting in 1-2 hours per day. • Not making adjustment to independent learning • Avoiding Part One minor subjects thinking they do not matter. • Not attending lectures, then avoiding warnings from department • Failing Part One/resits • Undiagnosed learning or other difficulty e.g. dyslexia

Some dates in the Bowland calendar • Bowland Arrivals day Saturday29th September (the new intake of first years) • Meet your advisees Thursday 4 October 4 pm • Freshers Dinner, Thursday 4 October Garstang Country Club & Hotel (free for advisors) • Meal(s) with advisees Michaelmas Spring terms(free) • Christmas Ball: 11th December at Dunkenhalgh Hotel (free for advisors) • Social Events for Advisors & senior Members Organised byColleges • Bowland Extrav: end of year celebrations with all Bowland students –late June! • Graduation (mid July). Join us in the ceremony & for lunch (free for advisors)

Your group of adviseesdetails handed out in the meeting or sent by email if you’re unable to attendTo fall in line with other colleges we’d like you to keep in contact with your past advisees but if there are any serious issues to refer them to us. I’ll be running my weekly Bowland Study and Wellbeing drop-ins on Wednesdays from 5-6 from week 1, primarily to support second and third years
