CIGRÉ – 2009 Activity Report for SC C6DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS AND DISPERSED GENERATION David Jacobson (C6) Manitoba Hydro
Outline • Scope and Objectives of the SC • Working Group Activities • Recent activities • New working groups • 2010 Preferential Subjects
SC C6 - Distribution Systems and Dispersed Generation - Scope • Assessment of the technical impacts and requirements that a more widespread adoption of DG and variable generation (RES) could impose on the structure and operation of the T&D systems. • Issues like rural electrification, Demand Side Management, use of storage are also included. • 10 Active WGs. 8 will be complete in next year.
WG C6.08 Integration of a large share of fluctuating power • Technical Brochure to be published in 2010 and will cover following topics: • Power Flow and congestion management in networks • Frequency control and operating reserve requirements • Voltage stability • Transient stability • Reactive Power Control and Voltage Control Capability • Influence of wind on conventional generation • National regulatory and support strategies for wind
SC C6 Working Groups – Proposals A strategic advisory group will review the Cigre Technical Committee “Network of the Future” Roadmap and propose areas of activities for C6.
SC C6 publications - 2009 • ELECTRA, June 2009,“Rural Electrification: A Scoping Report, WG C6.13”. • ELECTRA, August 2009, “The Challenge of Rural Electrification: CIGRE’s Strategy and Organizational Approach”.
SC Meeting • July 2009 – Calgary, Alberta – Cigre/IEEE Symposium Wind Integration • August 2010 – Paris • 2011 – Brazil or Italy (TBD)
2010 Paris Preferential Subjects • PS1: Planning and operation of networks incorporating dispersed energy resources and renewables (DER/RES) (23 papers) • Performance characteristics of distribution networks with high penetration of DER/RES, operating experiences • Effect of large scale integration on reliability • Provision of ancillary services by DER/Res • Regulatory schemes to support DER/RES and to implement smart grids • PS2: Demand Side Integration (8 papers) • Load characteristics of appliances • Practical experience of DSI through pricing • Vehicle to grid (challenges and opportunities) • PS3: New concepts and technologies for the electrification of rural and remote areas (8 papers) • Opportunities offered by microgrids and other advanced methods and renewables • Financing schemes, service delivery methods • Practical experience including system upgrades and grid connections
