  1. Last year, 3,000 students took the subject, down from 16,970 students 21 years ago. In addition, Ms Indranee noted that there is a common perception that it is hard to obtain good grades for literature.Bur Ms Indranee said MOE data shows that students' performance in literature has been consistently good, and in fact went up from a 90 per cent pass rate in 2002 to 95 per cent in last year. The percentage who obtained distinction also went up to 40 per cent in 2012, from 35 per cent in 2002. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1256392/1/.html

  3. WhyLit? The learning of Literature has the potential to teach ethics and values, as well as shed light on areas such as sociology, philosophy and history. It equips us with the skills to not just understand but to interpret situations, to not just communicate but to make conversation. It teaches us to be comfortable with ambiguity and open to other ways of seeing. It is the source of our cultural expression and a reflection of our unique Singapore identity.

  4. WhyLit? These are the very capacities we need to build within our young people as the world becomes more complex and global. A lack of students who are trained in literary ways of thinking and writing would mean less creativity, inventiveness and interest in the arts scene. But more importantly, for Singapore, it may mean generations of Singaporeans who may be literate in the language, but are unable to articulate well their views and feelings, closed to new ideas or uncomfortable with life's ambiguities. NMP Janice Koh 26 Feb 2013

  5. WhyLit? • In 2012, 56 FMS(S) pupils sat for the Full Literature Paper, ie 1.86% of the total candidature for the same paper.

  6. WhyLit? FMS(S) Mission To provide a holistic education in a Christian environment to nurture leaders of good character who are equipped to serve God, nation, community and school. … Consequently, in FMS(S), we aim to provide our pupils with enriching, holistic and diverse programmes to imbue in them one of our school’s core values of care and empathy as we recognise that in a rapidly changing world, they need to possess the emotional currency and develop new strengths to succeed.

  7. WhyLit? KEYNOTE ADDRESS BY MR HENG SWEE KEAT, MINISTER FOR EDUCATION, AT THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION WORK PLAN SEMINAR, ON WEDNESDAY, 12 SEPTEMBER 2012 AT 9.20 AM AT NGEE ANN POLYTECHNIC CONVENTION CENTRE The most critical part, and a test of every student an engaged learner, is how committed a student is in developing the values and character that will enable him to succeed in life and contribute to others. Knowledge and skills can become outdated, but a mature social-emotional core, deep values and strength of character will enable our children to continue to thrive as they grow. It is not cognitive skills alone, but character traits of empathy, graciousness, responsibility and integrity that will enable our kids to succeed.

  8. WhyLit? To be honest I thoroughly enjoyed literature as it is a subject where you have to use a lot of your emotion rather than pure logic and facts, unlike many subjects. You get to learn a little about people's behaviour and reactions to certain issues, understand human conditions as well as what the writers have to say (eg about urbanisation). Also it can help strengthen your English. Vanessa Ho (4B, 2012) A2 – Literature I personally feel that Literature is a subject that has made me more empathetic and responsible as a teen. With lit, you are given an opportunity to think in the shoes of your fellow man and it's more than comforting to know that someone else felt the same way as you when they were faced with problems which you've been through. Lawrence Wang (4B, 2012) B3 – Literature

  9. WhyLit? Literature was a very interesting subject. As someone who won't touch a storybook unless threatened in a life and death situation, taking lit has really opened my eyes to the world of language. I have learnt much from the subject like analysing the text and being able to pick out deeper insights or meanings in the stories, understanding imagery and so on. Poetry was my favourite part of lit. I felt like a detective, trying to decipher what was the hidden message of the poem and it was really fun doing so. Overall, lit has sparked an interest in language for me, taught me the skill of looking and thinking deeper and that our local literature tells us much about our Singaporean culture and we should not look down on it. I'm satisfied and happy with my journey taking lit, it was really fun! Joanne Chee (4B, 2012) A2 – Literature

  10. WhyLit? Literature is the only subject that made me feel human. Almost every other subject required intense memory work, but literature encouraged me to evoke an emotional response. It added a slice of humanness to what can be perceived as a robotic education system. Claire Carter (4A, 2012) A1 - Literature

Respond with knowledge and understanding to a variety of literary texts of different forms. Demonstrate understanding of the ways in which writers’ choices of form, structure and language shape meanings. Communicate a sensitive and informed personal response to what is read.
