Even grading and adding up points. (Value Stream Mapping) • Through purchasing their grades students track points, but learn financial management. • Treat all assignments as though it were a real assignment from a real employer, and students like they are employees. • Your students can always answer the question: “When will I ever need to know this after High School?”

Compare These Grading Methods • Why Would a Teacher Sell Grades? • Examples by Subject • The Time Card • The Expenses • Weekly Payroll and Check Balances • The Software • Conclusion Typical Weighted Grades: Test is 40% Quiz is 20% Homework is 30% Something Magical 10% Makeups: • 50% of 20% of each of the 5 tests is worth 40% of your grade. • Or drop the lowest grade. • unless you retake on the first Tuesday after tutoring, then your grade is valued at 30% of 20% of the forgoing • unless you miss the first makeup day, excluding school related activities • other excused absences as defined in the education code, then the 30% may, at the discretion of the teacher be waved, or a waiver of all items related to the poor test score • Something about a CST or standards test that can effect something else? • I hope I never have to explain to parent how this works. Grades for sale: “A” cost $750+ “B” cost $500+ “C” cost $250+ “D” staying out of debt. You have debt, you don’t pass. • You get paid for everything you do. • If you do it twice, you get paid twice. • If you do it 3 times, you get paid 3 times.

If you don’t call off to tell me you are missing work, you lose your job.

Bills: • They pay rent, car payments, gas, food, etc… • They found their own expenses, so they are always looking for cheaper bills to save more money. ON THEIR OWN, THEY CONTINUE TO FIND NEW BILLS!

CTE Class • Why Would a Teacher Sell Grades? • Examples by Subject • The Time Card • The Expenses • Weekly Payroll and Check Balances • The Software • Conclusion • Hire students as crew boss, designer, purchaser, designer, etc. Traditional: • Take 5 safety tests • Calculate board foot • Use the lathe to make a top • Build a box • Spot weld sheet metal • Use arc welder to cut Buy Your Grade: • Start at minimum wage • Qualify for raises (safety tests) • Qualify on equipment, get a raise • Minimize waste on projects (calculate scrap or waste) to maximize profits • Simple projects are worth less than large projects • A lathe spun “top” = $25 • Small box = $50 • Finishing = add $10 • Rabbet joints = add $30 • Etc.

To do this, you must demonstrate good knowledge of King Tut. Choose how you will do that: • $100- Two page Fact Report • $50- Create the Display • $25- Write the Placard for the front of the display • $10- if you build the Placard • $50- Create 20 trivia questions • $10- Develop Crossword with specific Vocab You have 2 weeks.

Choose how you will do that. • $100- Editorial (5 paragraph) • $50- Shorter version for a flyer • $10- Create advertisement • $50- Write as Narrative • $50- Write cliff notes version You have 2 weeks.

PLTW • Why Would a Teacher Sell Grades? • Examples by Subject • The Time Card • The Expenses • Weekly Payroll and Check Balances • The Software • Conclusion • Engineers are often required to track time based on projects they work on. • Engineers must make financial decisions that impact design such as: • Do I go back to redesign since the original solution isn’t working, or do I try to make this one work? • Do I hire a consultant to help me solve a problem? • I don’t have all the abilities, do I know someone who does? • Requiring them to manage their budget will help them learn the answers to these questions through experience, and they will have fun trying to be the richest person.

Pay them for this part. • The costs are low, no computer usage, but the pay off is high. • Sketching • Any practice ISO is worth money. • Calculations • Design Matrix • Modeling • Engineering Drawings • Presentations

PLTW: EXPENSES • Why Would a Teacher Sell Grades? • Examples by Subject • The Time Card • The Expenses • Weekly Payroll and Check Balances • The Software • Conclusion Engineering companies also have expenses: • Software licenses • Inventor, West Point Bridge Design, Solid Works, more… • Computer usage or internet usage time • Office Rental • Office Supplies Paper: If they must pay for printing out of their income, they will police themselves when it comes to printing paper • Outside consulting • Teacher, can you look at my drawings? If the teacher review costs money, but a peer review is free, where will they go first? • We want them to learn to teach each other, review the notes, and talk with their team and not rely solely on the teacher. • Machine shop (rental on equipment) • Missing deadlines or rework • If the final design doesn’t match the brainstorm, sketch, or design matrix, they must have hidden rework.

23. Software: Expenses Each student can have a standard or a unique charge for their bills. They must pay these bills each week and maintain their balance on a weekly basis.

The results have been increased interest in the students, fewer behavioral issues, and I don’t need to press them into doing assignments, they ask me for work. • Does it take time? • Not any more than normal. Once the information is set up you will find it is very easy. The students keep track of their own money. We use the computer to compare.
