Some TRADITIONSvary from region to region… In LOMBARDIA… … a glass of water is left for the thirsty souls.
Some TRADITIONSvary from region to region… In TRENTINO… …bells ring to call the dead and the table is left set and the fireplace lit for the whole night.
Some TRADITIONSvary from region to region… In SICILIA… … people let kids believe that if they pray and they are good they will then receive gifts from dead people. It is called "u cesto di morti", which means the basket brought by the deads!
Of course, FOODis an important part of the Italian culture. Some of the traditional dolcideimorti(sweets of the dead) that they would make are:
“Ossa deiMorti” (or literally “bones of the dead”)… …obviously due to their bone-like appearance, but they are just crunchy almond biscotti.
“Meini” or “Pan de Mei” Almond & honey cookies
“FavedeiMorti” (or literally “beans of the dead”)… Little bean-shaped cakes made with almonds.
in Sicily “Pupi di zuccaro” (or literally “dolls made of sugar”)… … and "Frutta di Martorana", which means marzipan made with almond flour and shaped in any kind of fruits and vegetable.
