  1. Project: IEEE P802.15 Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: [Bridge Device for Mesh Network] Date Submitted: [16 Sep., 2005] Source: [Youngae Jeon, Sangjae Lee, Jieun Kim, Sangsung Choi] Company [ETRI] Address [161, Gajeong-dong, Youseong-gu, Daejeon, Korea] Voice: [+82-42-860-1564], FAX: [+82-42-860-5218], E-Mail: [yajeon@etri.re.kr, strikelee@etri.re.kr, kje63247@etri.re.kr, sschoi@etri.re.kr] Abstract: [The document describes a bridge device enabling multi-hop communications between devices in different piconets by using power save mode.] Purpose: [The technology for increasing resource utilization and avoiding collision is an important aspect for future Mesh networks. We present a bridge device enabling multi-hop communications between devices in different piconets by using power save mode. This bridge device associates piconets using mutually independent channel and joins PS (power save) sets by considering the mesh network environment such as the number of piconet associated and the traffic of each piconets. This method enables devices in mesh networks to avoid collision and increase resource utilization] Notice: This document has been prepared to assist the IEEE P802.15. 2. Bridge Device (BDEV) for Mesh Network Youngae Jeon Sangjae Lee Jieun Kim Sangsung Choi ETRI Y. Jeon, S. Lee, J. Kim, S. Choi

  3. What is Bridge Device? • Bridge Device • Enables communication between devices in different piconets • Mesh Network • Consists of piconets using same channel, or • Consists of piconets using different channels Y. Jeon, S. Lee, J. Kim, S. Choi

  4. Mesh Network Configuration Piconets using different channels Piconets using the same channel Y. Jeon, S. Lee, J. Kim, S. Choi

  5. Issues of Piconets Using the Same Channel • If mesh network consists of multiple child piconets using the same channel, CTA utilization is limited • CTA utilization affects the expansion of mesh network Y. Jeon, S. Lee, J. Kim, S. Choi

  6. Issues of Piconets Using Different Channels • If mesh network consists of multiple piconets using different channels, CTA utilization can be increased • BDEV should support multi-channel access among different piconets • BDEV communicates with other piconets only in the wake beacon • All devices in the same piconet including BDEV communicate with each other using both the wake beacon and other beacons Y. Jeon, S. Lee, J. Kim, S. Choi

  7. PN 1 PN 2 PN 3 Multi-channel Access of BDEV • BDEV can support the multi channel access using mechanism such as : • Superframe synchronization between piconets in the different channel • Pseudo power save mode Y. Jeon, S. Lee, J. Kim, S. Choi

  8. Operation Outline of BDEV Scan Association Superframe Synchronization Channel Time Allocation BDEV information Announcement Data Transfer Y. Jeon, S. Lee, J. Kim, S. Choi

  9. Modified Header Fields for BDEV • MAC header contains the field such as : • SrcID indicates the initiating source DEVID • DestID indicates the final destination DEVID • SrcPNID indicates the PNID of SrcID • DestPNID indicates the PNID of DestID Y. Jeon, S. Lee, J. Kim, S. Choi

  10. Modified IE Fields for BDEV • Overall capability field is modified to include BDEV capability field • BDEV capability field consists of BDEV rating, Max association piconets, and Buffer size fields • BDEV rating : DEV desired mode, security, aux power, etc. Y. Jeon, S. Lee, J. Kim, S. Choi

  11. Newly Added IE Fields for BDEV • New information field includes one or more piconet information blocks • Each Piconet information block is used to inform devices of specific piconet to other device(s) of other piconet(s) Y. Jeon, S. Lee, J. Kim, S. Choi

  12. Conclusion • BDEV proposal • Enable multi-hop communications between devices in different piconets • Associate piconets using mutually independent channel and join PS (power save) sets • Enable devices in mesh networks to avoid collision and increase resource utilization • Future works • Superframe synchronization mechanism • Effective Channel time allocation • More detailed information elements Y. Jeon, S. Lee, J. Kim, S. Choi
