University of Missouri Inchon is the third largest city in South Korea, having a population of 2.66 million people and is ranked after Seoul and Busan. As the largest seaport on the west coast and the home for Korea's new international airport built on Yeongiong Island, Inchon is expected to become a major transportation hub in Northeast Asia. Inchon has transformed into a global business hub centered around the high-tech and futuristic Songdo International City. Inchon is an historic geographical location, marking America’s earlier’s engagement and subsequent presence in South Korea. The IFEZ comprises three designated areas, including Songdo, Yeongjong and Cheeongna. One hour away from Seoul, it has attracted foreign direct investment and transformed the Korean economy from traditional to high-tech and high-value industries. The IFEZ has become an optimal and strong base in logistics, international business, information technology, and human resources. South Korea committed to build campus for MU (classrooms-based on our • specifications, labs, dorms, faculty housing, dining, etc.) • 3. Buildings provided rent-free for five years. • 4. No Missouri funds will be used. • 5. Chancellor Brady • Deaton and President Moo Je Cho signed the joint MU/GNU • Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). • GNU delegation visited MU again in May 2006 to finalize plans • for dual degree programs in Agriculture. • President Ha of GNU came to MU in August 2008 to discuss • Inchon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) project with MU leaders. • MU delegation visited IFEZ in October 2008 and held an IFEZ- • MU-GMU MOU signing ceremony. • MU administrative executive team reviewed the proposal, • discussed potential benefits and challenges, submitted a • proposal of feasibility study, and developed a business plan. University of Missouri • MU campus leaders met with college deans and faculty • representatives in October 2008. • MU system Legal Counsel started to be engaged in November • 2008. • MU deans had a site visit in May 2009. • Vice Provost Handy Williamson attended the IFEZ groundbreaking • ceremony in May 2009. • MU-IFEZ Planning Year Funding Agreement was developed in July • 2009. • MU leaders and college deans discussed educational programs • and curriculum. University of Missouri • MU Provost convened an IFEZ campus team comprised of the • deans from the colleges of Arts and Science, Agriculture, Engineering, • Veterinary medicine, and library to build the curriculum. • Price Waterhouse was commissioned to conduct a preliminary • feasibility study and submitted a report to MU. • MU Legal Counsel engaged in review and comment on the feasibility • study. • Consensus was reached to go forward with project conceptualization. The College offers 15 degree programs to 2,100 undergraduate and 400 graduate students, respectively. The majors range from animal sciences and biochemistry to hotel and restaurant management. CAFNR conducts research on more than 14,500 acres at the 21 farms and centers owned by MU.
