  9. WHAT IS A CREDIT OR UNIT? • A credit is the .5 or 1.0 given to you (placed on your transcript) when you successfully pass a class. No credit is given for a failing grade although it is calculated in with your overall GPA. • The terms credit and unit are one in the same. Sometimes we refer to credit and sometimes unit. The values are always .5 (1/2 unit) or 1.0 (whole unit). The .5 credit is ½ year or 9 weeks of the semester. The 1.0 credit is 18 weeks of the semester, which on block schedule counts as an entire year. Some classes are yearlong (e.g. math and language arts). © 2006, Powerful Guidance Lessons All Rights Reserved Mildred J. Ellis

  10. CREDITS ALLOW YOU TO MOVE FROM ONE GRADE LEVEL TO THE NEXT • To move from 9th to 10th grade, you need 6 credits. (3 core and 3 elective) Core classes are math, science, social studies, language arts, and foreign language • To move from 10th to 11th you need: 12 credits. (6 core and 6 electives) • And finally… © 2006, Powerful Guidance Lessons All Rights Reserved Mildred J. Ellis

  11. TO BECOME A SENIOR • YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE A MINIMUM OF 18 CREDITS. (9 CORE AND 9 ELECTIVES) • IN ORDER TOGRADUATE, YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE ACCUMULATED 24 CREDITS. © 2006, Powerful Guidance Lessons All Rights Reserved Mildred J. Ellis

  12. HOW DO I ACCUMULATE CREDITS? • Just as most people go to work on a daily basis and get paid, you get credits by PASSING CLASSES • Think of this as getting paid. Do your work in class get .5 or 1.0 credit. • No work to class standard = NO credit. • Every student takes 4 classes per semester. You may have paired classes which are .5 credits each, but, in the end, you can earn only 4 credits per semester. © 2006, Powerful Guidance Lessons All Rights Reserved Mildred J. Ellis

  13. WHAT DO I DO IF I FAIL A NEEDED CLASS? • ATTEND • SUMMER SCHOOL • THIS IS VERY EXPENSIVE!!! Previously the cost was $500.00for 1 class (.5 credit) • Always consult your counselor for what is best for you. © 2006, Powerful Guidance Lessons All Rights Reserved Mildred J. Ellis

  14. GEORGIA HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION TESTWHAT IS IT? DOES IT AFFECT ME? • In order to receive a diploma in the state of Georgia, all students in public schools must take and pass all 5 parts of the Georgia High School Graduation Test. • These parts consist of: • writing • given in October of the junior year • mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts • given in March of the junior year © 2006, Powerful Guidance Lessons All Rights Reserved Mildred J. Ellis

  15. If you do not pass all parts of this test you will not receive a high school diploma. You will receive a Certificate of Attendance. • You have 5 opportunities before graduation to take and pass all parts of the GHSGT. • March of the junior year, • The summer following the junior year • October following the junior year • November following the junior year • March of the senior year with the class currently taking the test for the first time. © 2006, Powerful Guidance Lessons All Rights Reserved Mildred J. 16. END OF THE COURSE TESTEOCT • The EOCT • counts 15% of your final grade in the class • is required for some classes. • is very important! • If you require a variance or waiver to receive your high school diploma, you have to have passed all EOCTs connected to the area where you will seek the variance or waiver. • These tests come from the Georgia Department of Education and not from your teacher or school! © 2006, Powerful Guidance Lessons All Rights Reserved Mildred J. 17. THERE IS A STRONG CONNECTION BETWEEN 9TH GRADE AND 12TH • You begin accumulating credits in the 9th grade and continue building them until you graduate. IF YOU FIND YOURSELF HAVING DIFFICULTY IN CLASS: • 1. Talk with the teacher. • 2. Talk with your counselor. • 3. Talk with the graduation coach. • 4. Seek tutorial help. © 2006, Powerful Guidance Lessons All Rights Reserved Mildred J. Ellis
