Works Cited for a book • Last name, First name. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. FOR EXAMPLE • Koller, Jackie French.A Place to Call Home. New York: Aladdin Paperbacks, 1997. Print.
For example: • Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (263). Romantic poetry is characterized by the "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (Wordsworth 263). (owl.english.purdue.edu)

In-text Citation for authored works • You have to show your sources within your writing. • Author's last name • page number from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken must appear in the text.
Excerpt from article,“The Crisis in Darfur” paragraph 10 Survivors of such attacks usually flee to refugee camps in isolated parts of Darfur. Food and water in those camps are scarce, and those who venture from the camps to look for food often become targets of the Janjaweed. Many refugee camps were erected just across Darfur's western border, in Chad. The Janjaweed has reportedly ventured into Chad, attacking civilians from those camps as well.
In-text Citation for Facts on File articles (no author listed) Use the first two or three words of the article title in quotation marks and the paragraph number. No comma between article title and paragraph number Period goes AFTER the parenthetical citation.
Example of parenthetical citation As a result of violent attacks, people were forced to flee to less than safe refugee camps in remote areas of Darfur (“The Crisis in Darfur” para. 10). Even though there is no direct quote, I must cite the information.
Paraphrasing • A paraphrase is... • your own rendition of essential information and ideas expressed by someone else, presented in a new form. • one legitimate way (when accompanied by accurate documentation) to borrow from a source. • a more detailed restatement than a summary, which focuses concisely on a single main idea. What is a Bad Paraphrase? • A bad paraphrase is when you simply take out certain words with and replace them with synonyms, while maintaining the structure of the original quotation. (quotations.about.com)
What’s a Good Paraphrase? • To write a good paraphrase, borrow only the idea conveyed by the author. Express the sentiment in your own words, in your own way.
Exit Ticket Write one sentence using the information from the Darfur article that is a direct quotation. Write one sentence using the information in a paraphrase. For each sentence, write a correctly formatted parenthetical citation.
