  3. BACKGROUND • Communications and Information Technology provide opportunities • New economy is here • Playing field is level for Asia Pacific communities

  4. CHALLENGES IN COMMUNICATION & IT • Lack of capital • Inadequate work force • Lack of brilliant ideas • Lack of entrepreneurship

  5. ROLE OF ACADEMIC INSTITUTION • Capital • Capital is like oxygen. Important, but not a competitive advantage anymore • Many universities are not poor • Strategic business units exist in universities

  6. ROLE OF ACADEMIC INSTITUTION • Attack on work force problem • AP regions are famous in producing smart people • Universities only produce a small portion of work force • Formal degree is still important in AP culture. Must remove this barrier

  7. ROLE OF ACADEMIC INSTITUTION • Academic institutions as idea labs • Big companies started from universities:Sun Microsystems, Cisco, Silicon Graphics • “Out of the box” thinking should be encouraged

  8. ROLE OF ACADEMIC INSTITUTION • Entrepreneurship • Business is frowned upon in many AP universities • Entrepreneurship should become part of formal education

  9. INITIATIVES IN INDONESIA • Pool of funds from venture capitals • Local VCs • Global VCs • Millions of dollars have been invested

  10. INITIATIVES IN INDONESIA • World (global) quality work force • Standardize education: ABET, QUE, DUE initiatives • Internet in campus • Internet in school: • “Sekolah 2000” (School 2000) programmehttp://www.sekolah2000.or.id

  11. INITIATIVES IN INDONESIA • Still on education & industrial link • ITB: Co-running a graduate study programme (MSc. in IT) with an industry in Cikarang. Students will be given an opportunity to create companies. A stab at entrepreneurship

  12. INITIATIVES IN INDONESIA • Awareness and education in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) • IPR office on campus in ITB • Grants for patent • Cyberlaw initiatives at universities (UI & UNPAD)

  13. INITIATIVES IN INDONESIA • Bandung High Tech Valley (BHTV) initiatives • Conducive ecosystem • Bandung is a special city
