Pennsylvania Job Growth • Job growth overall in the health services industry in Pennsylvania has been quite rapid in the 1990s, rising by 19 percent since 1990 and rising 4.3 percent since 1996 • Nursing and personal care facilities have ADDED more than 6,200 jobs since 1996 and more than 31,000 jobs since 1990 • The fastest growing health services industries from 1996 to 1998 were health and allied services, offices of health practitioners other than physicians and dentists, and physician offices • The greatest number of new jobs in health services from 1996 to 1998 came from physician offices, nursing and personal care facilities, and hospitals • The slowest job growth from 1996 to 1998 occurred in home health care, osteopathic physician offices, and medical and dental labs

  6. Total Employment • Nursing homes are the fourth largest industry in PA, with more than 109,000 employees. • Physician practices rank ninth, with almost 74,000 employees • Hospitals still employ more than one-quarter of a million people in Pennsylvania.
