  13. Employment Structures • All jobs can be categorised into three main employment types • Primary • Secondary • Tertiary • In the 1980’s a fourth sector called Quaternary activities was added. It includes hi-tech research and development industries.

  14. Quaternary industries The Science Park on Technology Drive in south Bridgend is a good example of this sector “LogicaCMG is a major international force in IT services and wireless telecoms. It provides management and IT consultancy, systems integration and outsourcing services to clients across diverse markets including telecoms, financial services, energy and utilities, industry, distribution and transport and the public sector.” From the LogicaCMG website

Summary • You should now appreciate that there are three main categories of employment type. • A fourth, hi-tech, quaternary sector can also be added. • Some organisations are involved in more than one employment sector. • Employment structures will vary over time. Generally there is a decrease in primary and an increase in tertiary activities.
