Olympic National Park Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission InventoryFebruary 26th, 2008 Climate Friendly Parks Program Climate Leadership in National Parks
Overview • What is an emission inventory? • How was an emission inventory prepared for Olympic National Park (OLYM) • What are the inventory results?
What is an emission inventory? • Measure and track sources of human-induced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions • Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), high global warming potential (GWP) gases • Activity-based emissions by source (e.g., vehicles and equipment, landfilled waste) • Activity data X emission factor = emissions • Group sources into sectors (Energy, Transportation, Waste, Other)
Collected data on activities for: Park Operations Park-operated facilities, vehicles, heavy equipment, boats, aircraft, etc. Visitor Activities Concessioners Hurricane Ridge, Log Cabin Resort, Lake Crescent Lodge, Fairholme Store, Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club, Sol Duc Hotsprings and Kalaloch Lodge. Olympic Park Institute Who participated in the inventory?
Estimate Emissions The CLIP Tool Microsoft Excel-based application that national parks can use to prepare a GHG emission inventory
2007 GHG Emission Inventory Results Total GHG Emissions = 12,310 MTCO2E* *Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent 1,120 Households Energy Use
2007 GHG Emission Inventory Results Visitor GHG Emissions = 7,571 MTCO2E If every visitor reduced their emissions by 10% it would be enough to offset the emissions of Seattle.
2007 GHG Emission Inventory Results Park Operations GHG Emissions = 2,635 MTCO2E Mount Rainier GHG Emissions = 3,100 MTCO2E North Cascades GHG Emissions = 767 MTCO2E 480 Cars Annual Fuel Use
2007 GHG Emission Inventory Results Other GHG Emissions = 2,104 MTCO2E Concessioner Activities = 1,984 MTCO2E Forest Burning GHG Emissions = 717 MTCO2E
Visitor Use Derived from automated road counters Calculated from miles of road within park Recreational users only (estimate based on season). Does not account for: Miles driven to park Miles driven between destinations in park This adheres to standard inventory protocols Data Gaps and Assumptions
Landfilled Waste Estimates assume containers full. Calculated from billing statements of largest contractor. Estimates were based on shoulder season for smaller contractors. Wastewater Two wastewater treatment plants Did not account for: pumped waste from vaults or septic systems. Data Gaps and Assumptions
Data Gaps and Assumptions GHG emissions from electricity may appear low… but this is at a cost!
Moving Forward • Prepare Action Plan • Plan, quantify, and prioritize actions • Implement mitigation actions • Update Inventory • Monitor progress • Educate
