  3. Language and economics • Pierre Bourdieu: Linguistic marketplace • Linguistic resources • Whole languages • Knowledge of language styles, including social and situational uses • Utility: roughly equivalent to “satisfaction”

Language and microeconomics • How does language affect earnings or earning potentials? • Language discrimination • Bilingualism as a valuable resource • Depends on the language • Accents: Stigmatized or valorized? • Call centers in India • Grin & Sfreddo (1998) showed that having Italian as L1 in Switzerland in the non-Italian part of the country puts people at an economic disadvantage, earning about 30% less than others

Discussion questions • When is it appropriate for a government to interfere with language use in the marketplace (understood broadly)? • What argument would you give to someone who doesn’t want to support multilingualism (minority, foreign languages) to change their mind? • What argument would you give to someone who does want to support multilingualism to change their mind?
