  2. School Leadership: Mission & Vision • Program Mission • The mission of the M. Ed. School Leadership Program is to prepare individuals to be educational leaders who have a vision and a compelling sense of purpose for continuous improvement of schools and learning for all students. Within the graduate program, students will acquire the knowledge and skills to facilitate, motivate, and lead high levels of learning for all students and teachers. • Program Vision • The educational leaders we prepare and the EDLF faculty will influence the field and practice of school leadership to improve learning environments.

School Leadership:Curriculum • Develops effective school leaders based on current research • Aligns with local priorities and program accreditation • Field-based project • Prepares students to pass State Administrative Praxis exam • Curriculum Topics: • Leadership for Learning Communities • Strategic Leadership for School Improvement • Instructional Leadership – Principal’s Role in Leading a Learning Community • Instructional Leadership – Supervisor’s Role in Improving Teaching & Learning • Education Philosophy • Education for Diverse Populations • Education Law • Education Policy • Human Resource Management in Education • Education Finance • Curriculum Theory and Practice • Data-Driven Decision Making

School Leadership:Instructional Leadership in a PLC The program is designed around the conceptual framework of professional learning communities (PLCs), an effective strategy for improving teaching and learning. • Students learn to function as a PLC within the cohort • Students learn strategies to help schools develop into high-functioning PLCs, such as: • Inquiry-based processes • Data collection and analysis • Collaborative teaming • Professional development • Systems of prevention and intervention

School Leadership:Administrative Internship • Provide excellent on-site experience • Integration of coursework into real-life settings • Trained principal mentors • Faculty supervision • Reflective process and seminars • Meets State of Utah Requirements • Minimum 450 hours • Includes elementary & secondary experience • Internships generally completed in minimum of 3-hour time blocks • Requires State of Utah Level Two Teaching License

  7. School Leadership: Cohorts • Collegial cohort of students go through program together • Cohort provides support and network development during and after program • Cohort size ranges from 12 to 15 students

  8. School Leadership:Professional Development Opportunities • Schools Visits • Internship Trainings and Transition Dinners • Administrative Praxis Workshops • Guest Speakers and Presentations • Social Activities

School Leadership: Two Tracks • Same mission, goals, curriculum & faculty • Choice of two delivery tracks: • Full-time LPP : Leadership Preparation Program • 12 months of full-time study and • 2 months part-time study • Full-time internships • Part-time ExSL Track: Executive School Leadership Program • 22 months of part-time study or • Ability to customize your program timeline • Two-year, part-time internships

ExSL Track:Flexible & Part-time Flexibility to Design Your Own Path • Study at a flexible pace • Part-time…. full-time…. some of both  Fit your schedule • Courses: Time & location • Off-campus location: Mt. View High School (Orem) • Evenings 4:30-7pm (Tues) 4:30-7:30 pm (Thurs) • Be involved in designing your own internship • Types, locations, mentors, and number of hours • Maintain current full-time employment

ExSL Track: Two-Year, Part-time Internships • Summer School Internship • Variety of full-time summer school locations • District Office Internship • 1-2 week full-time summer internship at a district office • Other Options • Charter & private schools • State Office • Negotiated between district, ExSL and you • Resident School Internship • Mentor Principal = Your principal! • Up to 100 hours may be approved at the school where you teach • Lab School Internship • Mentor Principal–build your network! • Different school setting than where you teach • Variety of internship experiences during the year • Mini-Sabbatical

ExSL Track:Potential Internship Strategies • District-Supported Options • Professional development leaves, ¼ or ½ -time sabbaticals, mini-sabbaticals, attendance at principals meetings, etc. • Personal Leave Days • Use personal leave days to do internship hours • Holiday Schedules • Use holidays to do internship hours in a different district or in charter schools (different holiday schedule) • Sabbaticals • Provide time during regular school year • Leave of Absence • Take a leave of absence for year to finish coursework and internship

LPP Track:Full-Time Internship YouWillBe There Working Alongside Mentors Participate in the full range of school leadership • Roles and activities • Daily operations of the school • Participate in shifts of leadership roles and activities demanded by each season of the year • Year start up -- Embark on the Course • Body of the school year – Stay the Course • Year ending – Set the Course • Make lasting connections with mentor principals We Were There at...

LPP Track:Full-Time Internship • Four days of internship per week • Meet Wednesdays for full-day class instruction • Three 12-week internships • At all three levels in schools (elementary, middle, and high school) • Placement in schools functioning as professional learning communities • Experience in at least two different districts

  15. School Leadership:Application • Application Due Dates • LPP Track = December 1 • ExSL Track = February 12 • When Do I Begin? • LPP Track begins Spring Term (April) • ExSL Track begins Summer Term (June)

School Leadership:Application Requirements • BYU Graduate Studies (online) • Application for Admission to Graduate Study (online) www.byu.edu/gradstudies/admissions/instructions.php • Includes Ecclesiastical Endorsement • Graduate Exam Scores: GRE, GMAT, LSAT or MAT (choose one) • Two (2) official copies of all University Transcripts: GPA for last 60 hours • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation • Current Principal • Department Chair/Team Leader • Other • School Leadership Program (online) • Program Application • Resume • Letter of Intent • Copy of Level 2 Teaching Certificate (or documentation of equivalency)
