Facts About Major Selection • All freshmen/transfer students enter Lycoming College as undeclared • 90% of entering students are able to identify one or more potential majors. Those who are undecided about potential areas of interest will work with academic advisors, faculty, and Career Services to identify and explore possible choices. • In the first year or two, students narrow their field of potential majors to those which they will declare. • Students may declare a combination of three majors and minors. • 30% of freshmen entering in Fall 2005 declared by the end of the freshman year. • All students must declare at least one major by the end of the sophomore year.
A Major Success • Myth-Your undergraduate major predetermines your career options. • Most students and parents make a false connection between the undergraduate major and life/career path options. • Example- Psychology Majors Become Counselors or Psychologists

A Major Success Interest in, and Enjoyment of the Subject Matter, is the Number One Indicator of Success in Choosing a Major.
The Liberal Arts Process • Distribution Courses 13-16 • Required in English, Math, Foreign Language, Humanities, Fine Arts, Social Science, Natural Science • Major Courses 8 - 16 • Elective Courses 4 - 11 • Total to Graduate 32 Units
