TATA Box – 25-35 base pairs upstream from the start site • A change in the sequence of the TATA box can drastically change the transcription rate by RNA polymerase II
In most cases a change between the TATA box and the start box will not significantly affect the rate of transcription.
Initiator- cytosine (C) at the –1 position and adenine (A) at the transcription start site (+1) • The nucleotide sequence immediately surrounding the start site determines the strength of such promoters • (5`) Y-Y-A(+1)-N-T/A-Y-Y-Y (3`)
CpG Islands- CG rich stretch of 20-50 nucleotides. Approximately 100 base pairs upstream from start site • The dinucleotide CG is underrepresented in Vertebrae DNA, and the presence of CG rich regions just upstream from start site is a nonrandom distribution
