The secret to giving an effective mini-lesson is asking yourself this question: “What single problem am I trying to solve?”
Mini-lesson components • Mini-lessons are short, no more than 20 minutes. • Each mini-lesson covers a single defined topic. • The BEST mini-lessons are based on things real writers need to know. The lesson should be practical and used immediately. For example, if you are working on a fiction unit, a mini-lesson could be the essentials of character development, or a lesson on how to punctuate dialog.
Why use the mini-lesson approach? • Students are incorporating their learning in an authentic way. • Students develop greater confidence and independence. • Students spend less time on worksheets and teachers spend less time correcting papers. • Planning is simplified because lessons are short, build upon each other, and are based on student needs. • Students get more time to write and reflect on their writing.
What is the time frame? • Mini-lesson (5-20 minutes, 2 to 3 days a week is a start) • Independent Writing/Conferencing • (20 -45 minutes) • Reflection (5-15 minutes)
