  1. FIQHISLAMIC JURISPRUDENCE ZAKAAT-UL-FITR (Sadaqat-ul-Fitr)

  2. Zakatul-ul-Fitr is a special charity that is incumbent on every Muslim and it is to be paid before Eid Salaah. Should it be given after the Salaah it is seen as ordinary charity. The Prophet (saw) said: “If one pays Zakaat-ul-Fitr before the Salaah, it is considered an accepted Zakaah. If he pays it after the Salaah, it is considered an ordinary Sadaqah.”

  3. The purpose is to purify the fasting person of minor faults. The Prophet of Allah (pbuh) enjoined Zakaat-ul-Fitr on the fasting person to shield himself from any indecent act or speech and as a means of providing food for the needy. It is mentioned that: The Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, enjoined Zakaat-ul-Fitr as a purification for the one who fasts from any indecent act or speech, and as food for the needy”.

  4. On whom is it obligatory? Sa’id Al Khudri said: “We used to give on behalf of every child, old person, freeman and slave during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace. One sa’ of food, or one sa’ of dried cottage cheese, or one sa’ of Barley, or one sa’ of dates, or one sa’ raisins as Zakaat-ul-Fitr.” In this saying the jurists agreed unanimously that the Muslims are the addressee in the command, whether male or female, minor or adult, slave or freeman. Abu Haneefa, Ash-Shafee and Al Malik maintained that a man is not obligated to pay for his minor children if they have their own wealth sufficient for Zakaatul-ul-Fitr. Abu Haneefa also maintained that a wife should pay for herself although there seem to be a general agreement for all persons whose maintenance is obligatory.

  5. How much is Obligatory? It is established that Zakaat-ul-Fitr paid in the form of dried dates is not less than one sa’ (approximately 3 kilograms). It is related in the tradition of Abu Sa’id Al Khudri who said: “We used to give on behalf of every child, old person, freeman and slave during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace. One sa’ of food, or, one sa’ of dried cottage cheese, or one sa’ of Barley, or one sa’ of dates, or one sa’ raisins as Zakaat-ul-Fitr”

  6. When is it due? Abu Haneefa, Al Layth, Ash Shafee and the second report of Malik say that Zakaat-ul-Fitr is due at the start of Fajr on the day of Eid.

  7. Recipients of Zakaat-ul-Fitr The recipients of Zakaat-ul-Fitr are the same as Zakaah on wealth. Allah epitomizes the various categories in one ayah saying: إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُ لِلۡفُقَرَآءِ وَٱلۡمَسَـٰكِينِ وَٱلۡعَـٰمِلِينَ عَلَيۡہَا وَٱلۡمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُہُمۡ وَفِى ٱلرِّقَابِ وَٱلۡغَـٰرِمِينَ وَفِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبۡنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ‌ۖ فَرِيضَةً۬ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَڪِيمٌ۬ “As- Sadaqah (here it means Zakaah) are only for the Fuqura’ (poor) and Al-Masakeen (poor) and those employed to collect (the funds), and to attract the heart of those who have inclined (towards Islam) and to free the captives, and those in debt, and for Allah’s cause, and for the wayfarer (a traveler who is cut off from anything); a duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is Al-Knower, All Wise”. [Surah At-Tawbah 9:60]
