Timothy Leary • Promoted the use of LSD as mind expanding • Even the CIA used LSD • LSD would become illegal in California in 1966
Opposition to Hippies • Signs saying “Make America Beautiful – give a hippie a haircut”
Height Ashbury • Located in San Francisco, seen as the capital of hippies • Turn away from traditional living arrangements • Communes • Live on streets

Decline of Movement • New life style did not have enough structure such as who would cook and pay bills • Peace and love but no money • Many hippies ended up on welfare, dependent on the society that they had rejected
Hippie Attitudes • “Do your own thing” • Sexual attitudes more casual • Conservative Response • Late 1960s Nixon talked about the decline of American society • J. Edgar Hoover head of FBI warned the counterculture that they would be seen as “revolutionary terrorist”
