  2. Rocks & Minerals • Rock: a solid mixture of minerals and other substances • mixture: not a “pure” substance • minerals: next slide • other substances: all sorts of stuff, like organic material (ex: coal)

  3. Rocks & Minerals • Mineral: a type of compound (made of one or more elements) • naturally occurring (not man-made) • inorganic (not living or once living) • solid (not liquid or gas) • crystal structure (orderly arrangement of atoms) • definite chemical composition (unique recipe)
