  1. The Distributive Property Day 2

  2. Let’s look back So yesterday we learned about partial products. Those are when you split up a two digit number into ones and tens, multiply, and then add the products together. The distributiveproperty allows you to multiply a sum by a number. The distributive property and partial products work together!

  3. So today, we’re going to use the distributive property to solve problems like we did yesterday! For a field trip, 42 students each paid $3 for bus transportation. How much money was spent in all for bus transportation? My problem would look like this: 3 x ( 40 + 2) This is what we did yesterday. Break up 42 into tens and ones.

  4. Now how will we solve it? X ( 40 + 2 ) We are going to distribute the 3 to both numbers in the parenthesis. + ( 3 x 2 ) ( 3 X 40 ) Do this with me in your notebook! Now multiply what is in each parenthesis. + ( 3 x 2 ) ( 3 X 40 ) 120 + 6 = 126

  5. So then the answer to the problem: For a field trip, 42 students each paid $3 for bus transportation. How much money was spent in all for bus transportation? $126 was the total collected for the bus transportation!

  6. Let’s try another. Find the product of 7 x 26 using the distributive property. 7 x 26 = 7 x (20 + 6 ) Start by breaking up the 26 = ( 7 x 20 ) + ( 7 x 6 ) Now let’s distribute the 7 to both of the numbers in the parenthesis. = 140 + 42 Now multiply each set. Add the partial products! = 182

  7. Try some on your own! X 13 = X 8 = 19 X 9 = I want to see work in your notebook!

  8. Let’s RE- The distributive property lets us multiply a sum by a number We need to make sure that we are distributing the number outside the parenthesis to both numbers in the parenthesis Make sure to add your partial products at the end!

  9. BONUS!!! Here is a bonus question. If you would like, you may try it. If you attempt the problem, you will receive a prize. If you attempt AND get the problem correct, you will receive a double prize! Good luck! Use the distributive property to solve: 9 x 874 =
