  2. 3Phases • Paratroopers= Fly in first to take bridges, escape routes, etc. • Airplanes= Destroy German defenses, create craters for shelter on the beaches • Soldiers= Ships bringing soldiers to take control of territory

  3. Omaha Beach • 43,250 American Soldiers • 3,000 Casualties • Soldiers landed in 3 waves of attack • Most casualties in the 1st wave

  4. Effects of D-Day • Allies sweep across western Europe to be joined by the Soviets • 5,000 Allied casualties • Many Historians consider the invasion as the greatest military achievement of the 20th Century
