O Sacred Head, Now Wounded Words by Paul Gerhardt, based on a Medieval Latin poem; tr. James W. Alexander Music by Hans Leo Hassler; harm. Johann Sebastian Bach Words and Music public domain 231
O sacred Head, now woundedWith grief and shame weighed downNow scornfully surroundedWith thorns, Thine only crown
How pale Thou art with anguishWith sore abuse and scornHow does that visage languishWhich once was bright as morn
What Thou, my Lord, hast sufferedWas all for sinners’ gainMine, mine was the transgressionBut Thine the deadly pain
Lo, here I fall, my Savior’Tis I deserve Thy placeLook on me with Thy favorVouchsafe me to Thy grace
What language shall I borrowTo thank Thee, dearest FriendFor this, Thy dying sorrowThy pity without end
O make me Thine foreverAnd should I fainting beLord, let me never, neverOutlive my love to Thee
