REU Site: Transdisciplinary Undergraduate Research Initiative on Nanostructured SeminconductorsPI: Mark T. Swihart, co-P.I. Alexander N. CartwrightThe University at Buffalo (SUNY), DMR-0243833 Education and Outreach: During summer 2005, this program brought together a diverse cohort of 14 students from 11 different universities, representing 7 major fields of study in science and engineering. These students worked on cutting-edge research projects with 11 faculty across 4 academic departments, around the common theme of synthesis, characterization, and application of nanomaterials with unique photonic, electronic or magnetic properties. The images on the right show (a) participant Ahlam Hmadouch preparing to give her end-of-summer presentation; (b) SEM image of Yoda (who says ‘judge me not by my size’) created by participants Zachary Lochner and Mark Cianchetti as part of a test pattern for the e-beam lithography system they used in their projects, (c) dispersions of photoluminescent silicon nanoparticles with size and surface chemistry dependent emission spectra, prepared by participant Kristen Lane, and (d) eleven of the participants after the Whirlpool Jet Boat ride on the Niagara River near Niagara Falls.
