  1. Obj. 1.01 Outline factors & strategies that promote personal development Teen Living Notes

  2. Adolescence – the period of life when you prepare to be an adult. • You develop physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially (and morally) • Self –concept: how you define what you are • Self-esteem: how you feel about your self • Potential – capability of becoming more than you are right now.

  3. Calling the owner of a blank check that is found while cleaning tables shows good character on the job. • Noticing that the new student was eating lunch alone, Carla asked if she could join her; she demonstrates a caring attitude • Shea ignored Dee’s mispronunciation of a word in front of her friends; this shows respect for others • To demonstrate trustworthiness, Diane dry-cleaned the blouse she borrowed before returning it to Kim

  4. If Tiffany wants to prioritize her to –do list, she should rank the items by importance • Ron rewrote & organized his classroom notes each night; he is improving classroom notes for his/benefit • Sally listens to her tape recorded notes as she takes a bath; she is dovetailing her tasks (combine activities) • Nell is planning the things she wants to accomplish next month; A calendar is a management tool that will be most efficient for her to use

  5. Helping a child choose the sport event in which they might best succeed in would help in developing a high self-esteem. • Hormones causes physical changes in a teen’s body as he/she grows from adolescence to young adulthood • Bryan knows that his personality is influenced by his neighborhood, the school he attends, and by friends; he is influenced by “environment” • Rex talks to the school counselor about a situation at home that is disturbing him; he is demonstrating a mental quality of health

  6. Charles found a ring in the hallway & turned it into the office; he was exhibiting the character trait of responsibility. • A weekly calendar is a good time management tool for a student to use so that they can become more organized & have better study skills • Dovetailing: overlapping activities in order to save time • Social change is characterized by teens wanting to spend time with friends rather than their family

  7. An important part of keeping mentally healthy is expressing emotions in positive ways. • An important aspect of character is helping a person choose right from wrong. When you have done wrong, to act responsible calmly accept your punishment and admit your actions. • Eye color, hair color, & nose shape are hereditary traits • Procrastinate – to put things off for later • A “to-do” list of homework assignments can help a student decide homework priorities

  8. Teenage friends are known as “peers” (people your own age). • A person can improve self-esteem by accepting themselves as they are • Character development begins in early childhood • When trying to study for an exam or test, minimize distracting noises • Learning & study skills can be improved by organizing classroom notes. One who ask questions during note taking or lectures to the teacher to prepare for a test in their class would be showing great interest in preparing themselves for the test. • A positive way to deal with stress is to exercise

  9. Empathy – understanding one’s need. A good way to relate to someone who is in need is to experience yourself. • Conscience – feeling a nagging or tugging within yourself, especially when you have done wrong. • Completing assignments or chores all on your own without being reminded or told is showing great responsibility. • Overcommitted – trying to do to much and having no time to complete the jobs that are most important. This can be a troublemaker of time management. Learn to say no at times when you have already committed yourself to other projects.

  10. Use a date book to record homework in order to not forget them. • Weekly calendar – is a good time management tool for a student to become more organized and have better skills. • Choosing right from wrong is an important aspect in developing good character.
