AME 60676Biofluid & Bioheat Transfer Project Outline
Project Goal Utilize computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to analyze biotransport and/or bioheat transfer phenomena in cardiovascular structures/devices and their potential contribution to disease initiation/progression
Project outline • Three-dimensional anatomy reconstruction • Conduct literature review to understand: • the anatomy and function of the structure/device of interest • the potential role of hemodynamics and/or heat transfer in physiological or pathological states • the state-of-art in clinical, experimental and computational studies conducted on the proposed topic • Write a project proposal in NIH format providing: • background on the problem • a clear hypothesis • the objective of your study (should permit to test the hypothesis) • the potential significance of your work • the approach (methodology) used to achieve the objective • Develop the model in ANSYS and post-process the results • make justified assumptions to simplify the problem • identify the modeling parameters (e.g., material properties, boundary conditions, …)
Project outline • Present the results in: • report (scientific paper format) • oral presentation
Project 1: Ascending Aorta Aneurysm • Objective: Study blood flow patterns in an ascending aorta aneurysm and a normal ascending aorta. • Aim 1: design realistic 3D aorta model (normal and diseased) • Aim 2: study the effects of aneurysm on hemodynamics (streamlines, velocity fields, pressure, wall shear stress) in ascending aorta.
Project 2: Prediction of Blood Damage in a Heart Assist Pump • Objective: Use CFD technique to predict the blood damage in a heart assist pump • Aim 1: reconstruct a realistic heart assist pump • Aim 2: Set up CFD simulation with proper boundary conditions, characterize CFD features (pressure rise, shear stress, fluid force), and quantify blood damage in the heart pump
Project 3: Hypothermia for Prevention of Cerebral Ischemia • Objective: Characterize the effectiveness of a cooling device to create cerebral hypothermia • Aim 1: reconstruct a realistic brain and vasculature model • Aim 2: characterize brain temperature distribution following the use of the cooling device implanted on the common carotid artery
Project 4: Carotid Artery Stenosis • Objective: Use CFD modeling to study the effects of stenosis on flow patterns in carotid artery • Aim 1: design a realistic 3D carotid bifurcation (normal state, 30% degree of stenosis and 60% degree of stenosis) • Aim 2: quantify effect of plaque on hemodynamic performance reduction (velocity, secondary flow and wall shear stress)
