  2. After Lincoln was killed in 1865, Vice-President Andrew Johnson became president and followed Lincoln’s plans. In order for a state to come back into the Union it had to: Forbid slavery Accept the federal government White Southerners pledged loyalty to the Union were pardoned.   3. Amendments Passed After the War • 13th- Freed all slaves in the United States • 14th – All persons born in the United States are citizens • 15th – Citizens can not be stopped from voting on account of race or color

  8. Black Codes Passed in the South Laws passed in the South to limit the freedom of former slaves. Examples: Poll taxes, literacy tests to vote Segregation (separation by race) Forbidding them to sit on juries Forbidding them to carry a weapon All freedmen had to be employed Could not gather in public without a white person present

  9. Many freed slaves became sharecroppers. The landowner provided tools, seed, and housing. The farmer gave the owner a share of the crop. The farmers took out loans from the owners and were always in debt to the owner. Sharecropping pg. 543 / play video

  11. African Americans faced poverty and racism in the South. The KKK wanted to keep African Americans powerless. They terrorized black people, rode on horseback, dressed in white hoods, beat people, burned homes, and lynched some victims. Ku Klux Klan-pg 544
