Future TRILL Work 1 • Potential Additional TRILL Work: • Abbreviated Encapsulation • TRILL over IP Future TRILL Work
Abbreviated Encapsulation • An optional way to shorten TRILL Data frames that are on point-to-point Ethernet net links. • On a point-to-point, one-hop physical link, the Outer.MacDA, Outer.MacSA, and Outer.VLAN don’t actually serve any purpose. • The encapsulated frame inside a TRILL Data frame is Ethernet format. • So, just drop the original Outer fields and move the Inner fields to the Outer fields. Abbreviated Encapsulation • General TRILL Data frames on Ethernet: • Abbreviated frame saves 16 bytes: Outer MAC DA Outer MAC SA Outer VLAN . TRILL Ethertype . TRILL Header . Inner MAC DA Inner MAC SA Inner VLAN . Payload . . FCS . . MAC DA MAC SA VLAN . TRILL Ethertype TRILL Header Payload . New FCS Future TRILL Work
Abbreviated Encapsulation • Abbreviated TRILL Data frames are only safe on point-to-point links. • Support indicated by locally advertising it in your Hellos. • Abbreviated TRILL Data frames can be recognized by “outer” MAC DA being neither the unicast address of the port receiving it nor any TRILL multicast address. • It looks like a “native” frame, except for the Ethertype, but is on a point-to-point link, where there should not be any native frames (only TRILL frames and Layer 2 control frames). TRILL over IP • Although the encapsulated frame inside a TRILL Data frame is always in Ethernet format, TRILL is designed to run over a variety of link technologies between RBridges. • Ethernet: The TRILL base protocol standard. • PPP: draft-ietf-pppext-trill-protocol-01.txt • IPv4/6: Logical to do in the TRILL WG. • Other: MPLS, … ? TRILL over IP • Would enable parts of an RBridge campus to be interconnected by IPv4 or IPv6 links to form a single logical campus: Campus Part Enterprise Internet Campus Part Global Internet Campus Part Campus Part Future TRILL Work
TRILL over IP • Within a relatively safe context that supports multicast, such as some enterprise networks, TRILL over IP ports would require only an IP address and, probably, security info. They could then find each other and establish secure links. • Margaret Wasserman has expressed interest in working on a draft.
