Senior Year • Junior year is often viewed as the most important year of high school, but Senior year is also crucial. • Colleges can change admission decisions based upon performance during the senior year. • Just say NO to SENIORITIS! • Per CCSD Policy, ALL seniors must be enrolled in 4 Core Classes each semester!

College Admission Requirements • High school graduation requirements VS. college entrance requirements! • Colleges and universities may look for additional credits in certain core or elective areas. • Performing or visual art credit • World language • Research colleges and university admission requirements to determine what courses are mandatory.

The Timeline • September • College Readiness Day, Wednesday, September 19 • Overview of college application process • Can begin submitting transcript requests on September 20 • Counselors in English classes, September 24 – October 1 • Senior Seminar • Register to retake ACT, SAT, or SAT Subject tests • ONLY if needed • Finalize list of colleges and application deadlines • Should include 3-7 schools • Request teacher and/or counselor recommendations • Only if needed • Must complete Naviance form and talk with recommender face-to-face! • Start working on application essay • Only if needed • Some colleges have specific questions to be answered • Research scholarships • Check specific school websites • Naviance • www.fastweb.com

The Timeline • October • Attend college visits at Grandview • See College Visit Schedule in Naviance • NACAC National College Fair @ Colorado Convention Center • October 7, 2012 – 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm • In-State College Fair @ Cherry Creek High School West Bldg. • October 8, 2012 – 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm • Greater Denver College Fair and Workshop @ Douglas County High School • October 13, 2012 – 10:00 am – 2:00 pm • Polish application essay • Process applications with November deadlines • Be aware of implications for applying Early Action or Early Decision • Plan to visit colleges over Fall Break • Schedule visit on college’s website • Ask to meet with specific departments • Concerned about paying for college, schedule time with the Fin. Aid office

The Timeline • November • Process applications with December and January deadlines • Don’t forget about Thanksgiving Break & Winter Break! • The Post Graduate Center requires at least 10 school days to process transcript requests! • Teachers and counselors require at least 10 school days for writing letters of recommendation.

The Timeline • December • Last day to turn in transcript requests for January deadlines is December 7. • Prepare to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) • www.fafsa.ed.gov • Log on prior to Jan. 1, 2013 to get your PIN • Both student and parent must register for a PIN • www.pin.ed.gov • Cannot log on to FAFSA until Jan. 1, 2013 • Priority deadline for completion is March 1, 2013

Requesting Transcripts • Student must complete the Transcript Request Form. • Any additional forms for teachers to complete must be given to teachers directly. • Any additional forms for counselor to complete must be turned in to Post Graduate Center with Transcript Request Form • Student must check Naviance to see if teacher recommendations have been completed before turning in Transcript Request Form. • Completed Transcript Request Forms can only be turned in to Mrs. Storgaard. • Do not give your counselor any of the forms. • Mrs. Storgaard will process your application with the counselor. • Do not leave forms on the desk! • Student can check Naviance to see when transcript request was processed. • Please allow 4-6 weeks for colleges/universities to process your transcript!

14. $$ Financial Aid $$ • Money that is: • Given – grants/scholarships • Borrowed – loans (student and/or parent) • Earned – work study • Sources include: • Federal Government (FAFSA) • State Government (FAFSA, College Opportunity Fund “COF”) • Institutional Aid (FAFSA and/or CSS Profile) • Private businesses/organizations (Scholarship applications)

15. Financial Aid • Grants: • Money from Federal, State, Institution, or private company • Most are need-based (FAFSA or CSS Profile) • Most do not need to be repaid

Financial Aid • Loans: • Money that is borrowed from federal or state government (FAFSA) • Student subsidized loan – 3.4% • Student unsubsidized loan – 6.8% • Parent PLUS loan – 7.9% • Federal Perkins Student Loan – 5% • Can wait to pay back after graduation • Money that is borrowed from a bank, credit union, or school (Separate Loan Application) • Interest rates are typically higher – up to 18% • Must start paying it back as soon as it is received

17. Financial Aid • Work Study • Money earned from work, typically on-campus, while in college • Money earned does not have to be repaid • Students are paid as they work; money can be used for expenses throughout the term.

Financial Aid • When applying to colleges, don’t worry about the initial costs. • All colleges will provide a financial aid notification with letter of acceptance. • Student must be notified by April 1 of admission status and financial aid to be received from each college. • Student and parent will review each financial aid “package” and decide what is the best option. • Student must accept admission to 1 school by May 1. • Net Price Calculator • Every college will have this on their website • Estimate of what it will cost for student to attend

Free Applicationfor Federal Student Aid • General application to qualify for financial aid for ANY post-secondary school in the US • Some scholarships use this information to determine need • Complete FAFSA in January or early February • File taxes early this year! • Attend FAFSA Workshop on January 28, 2013 • RSVP required • Use www.fafsa.ed.gov • Both student and parent will need to apply for PIN before completing • Watch out for scams(www.fafsa.com)

Computing Financial Need • Upon completion of the FAFSA, the Federal Government issues the student and Expected Family Contribution (EFC). • Based on parent(s) income, parent(s) non-retirement assets, student income, and student assets • The EFC is how much the federal government believes your family can afford to send your student to school • Regardless of varying college tuition rates, the EFC will be the same for each college. • Financial Need = College Costs – EFC • It is possible to have a “need” at some schools and not others.

College Opportunity Fund • Also known as the COF – “cough” • This stipend pays a portion of total in-state tuition when attending a Colorado public institution or a participating private institution. • Colorado Christian University • Regis University • University of Denver • Will pay a portion of up to 145 undergraduate credit hours • Stipend for 2012-13 • $62/semester credit for PUBLIC institutions • $31/semester credit for PRIVATE institutions • Apply at www.cof.college-assist.org
