Life Story -1920’s moved to Chicago and joined Greater Salem Baptist Church Choir -She was soon a member of Johnson Gospel Singers and stayed for awhile -Then started with Thomas A. Dorsey the gospel composer -She became popular in France in the 1950’s -She got her own program on CBS in 1958 -At this time she appeared at the Newport Jazz festival -She appeared in Rhode Island with Duke Ellington -She was an active supporter of civil rights in the 1960’s -Sang at March on Washington at the request of Martian Luther King Jr. in 1963 -After his death in 1963 she sang at his funeral and pulled from political activities -Later she had many health problems and died of a heart attack
