  3. Andrew Jacksons Past • 1814 • Creek Indians loss 22 million acres in Georgia and Alabama • 1818 • Jackson sent to Florida • Punish Seminoles • 1814-1824 • Helped to sign 9 out of 11 treaties • Relocated Natives to West

  4. Indian Response and Resistance • Assimilation- transforming to American culture • Gave up pieces of land • Waged War

  5. Indian Removal Act 1830 • Jackson urged Congress to pass the law • Remove Natives from land to reserved land in the West • Allowed the President to make treaties directly with tribes in the East • Land in the West • Did NOT say they could be removed by force

Native American and White Response • Called upon the Supreme court to protect themselves • 1831 passed a law stating Natives had rights to their land • Right to self government • Jackson and Georgia refused to acknowledge the ruling • Pushed Removal • Resistance was followed with military force

  8. Indian Resistance • Sac and Fox in Illinois • Led by Chief Black Hawk • Black Hawk War • Fought for 2 Years • Chief taken away in chains • Seminoles in Florida • Osceola young Chief • Fought resistance for 10 years

  11. Trail of Tears • 17,000 Cherokee • Dragged out of homes • Federal troops assisted in relocation • 4,000 died on the way

  12. Results • By 1837 46,000 Natives Americans were relocated • Opened up 25 million acres of land to white settlers • Since 1928 the US has honored Jackson by placing him on the $20.00 bill
