SS7G2 The student will discuss environmental issues across the continent of Africa.
Strands a. Explain how water pollution and the unequal distribution of water impacts irrigation, trade, industry, and drinking water. b. Explain the relationship between poor soil and deforestation in Sub-Saharan Africa. c. Explain the impact of desertification on the environment of Africa from the Sahel to the rainforest.
Water Changes Everything!! http://youtu.be/BCHhwxvQqxg
The largest cause of water pollution in Africa is from human activity. • Bathing, washing and defecating in the water produces pollution in the water. Other acts such as mining, industry and the damming of water ways have also produced water pollution.
Africa faces huge challenges with multiple issues that adversely affect public health. • Water Pollution • Unequal distribution of Water
Africa's Water • Many countries in Africa do not have enough clean water even though they have large rivers!!!! • Why??? Because of the contamination of the water sources that they do have or not being close enough to fresh water sources
SS7G2 • b. Explain the relationship between poor soil and deforestation in Sub-Saharan Africa • .c Explain the impact of desertification on the environment of Africa from the Sahel to the rainforest http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghp0_YB0osw
Deforestation Vs Desertification Deforestation Desertification Desertification is the degradation of land in arid or semiarid regions caused by climatic changes, human influence, or both. • Deforestation is the clearance or the removal of a forest accelerating into the remaining areas of undisturbed forest, and the quality of the remaining forests is declining. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kl1N1f8N6LU
Deforestation in Africa As a result of deforestation and desertification in the Sahel Region, that why its becoming and expanding desert. The Sahel was once believed to be very good farm land
Why Deforestation? • Deforestation is typically done to make more land available for housing and urbanization, timber, large scale cash crops such as soy and palm oil, and cattle ranching.
Effects of Deforestation • Loss of Species: • Soil Erosion
Effects of Deforestation Cont.. • Life Quality: Soil erosion can also lead to silt entering the lakes, streams, and other water sources. This can decrease local water quality, contributing to poor health in the local population.
What Causes Desertification? • Overgrazing • Destruction of plants in dry regions is causing desertification to occur. People are cutting down tress to use them as a source of fuel. Once all these trees are cut down there is nothing to protect the soil. Therefore, it turns to dust and is blown away by the wind.
The Effects Of Desertification • Soil becomes less usable • Vegetation is Lacked or Damaged • Food Loss • Causes Famine
