Adjectives

1. Adjectives A word that describes a noun or a pronoun is called an adjective. Adjectives make writing more descriptive!

2. Adjectives Adjectives tell: What kind – We climbed steeprocks. Which one – Those hikers ran fast. How many – The two dogs sat quietly.

4. Adjectives Adjectives make your sentences more descriptive. The girl ran down the street. The little, red-haired girl ran down the narrow, brick street.

5. Adjectives Adjectives can appear in a variety of places in a sentence. Powerful lions roam in Africa. Giraffes seem gentle and shy. Golden retrievers are friendly.

6. Adjectives When you use 2 or more adjectives, separate with a comma. We saw adorable, furry puppies in the park.

7. Adjectives When there are 2 adjectives and one tells how many, DO NOT use a comma. Two gray geese ran across the road. Several furry puppies sat on the bench.

8. Demonstrative Adjectives This, that, these, those This and these refer to things that are close. That and those refer to things that are far away.

9. Predicate Adjectives • Sue is nice. • The puppy is cute. • The hat is green. • The coat is orange.

10. Proper Adjectives • An adjective formed from a proper noun is called a proper adjective.

11. Proper Adjectives Always begin with a capital letter!! I love American cheese. We ate Chinese food last night. I have never been to an African jungle.

12. Articles a, an, the Use a before a word that starts with a consonant. Use an before a word that begins with a vowel. The refers to something in particular.
