Chongfu’s SEL Prototype • Area of Focus: Communication skills • Target Group: • 17 P5 academically-challenged pupils • Intended SEL Competencies: • Self Awareness • Social Awareness
Objectives: To check our assumptions of less academically inclined pupils being poor communicators. To develop specific programmes for this group of pupils. To foster racial harmony and social harmony
Scenario 1 When Communication breaks down: X accidentally knocks into Y Y fumes and yells at X, “U no eyes or what!” Starts a fight
Scenario 2 When Communication is effective: X accidentally knocks into Y X apologises, “Sorry I lost my balance and knocked into you. Are you alright?” Social Harmony Y: “It’s alright. I’m fine.”

The ‘Big Giant’ of the class. • Classmates saw the softer side of him. • Child was able to articulate that he was angry with friend for calling him names a long time ago.
Learning Points • SEL Competency: Self Awareness Pupils become more self-aware by thinking deeper about their own feelings, strengths and weaknesses. It was observed that pupils displayed a more positive attitude about themselves after they were made to articulate their strengths.
Learning Points • SEL Competency: Self Awareness • Having to communicate their feelings to their peers, they had to reflect deeper about themselves and this in turn made them understand themselves better.

Learning Points • The success of the teaching of SEL competencies does not lie mainly on the design of the lessons. The lesson plans merely serves as a guide for implementation. The teacher as facilitator plays an important role in imparting and instilling the SEL competencies.
In conclusion, SEL is a comprehensive term for the nurturance of knowledge, habits, skills and ideals that characterise the whole person and in so doing…….
